The general scheme for the development of the railway junction of St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region was developed by Lengiprotans in 2014.
The project is aimed at the timely implementation of the reconstruction of the infrastructure of the railway junction and the introduction of modern advanced technologies of railway transportation to meet the transport needs of both constituent entities of the Russian Federation. Prevention of the formation of contradictions between decisions on the development of railway transport and the general plan of St. Petersburg, schemes of territorial development of municipalities and general plans of settlements of the Leningrad region is provided.
The project provides for:
1. Development of railway directions and sections to ensure all types of passenger traffic, taking into account the growth of their volumes.
2. Creation of a system of high-speed rail transport in the Petersburg urban agglomeration based on the consolidation of the development of railway infrastructure and the metro through the creation of interchange complexes at future intersections of their lines.
3. Removal of the main part of the work on the reception and dispatch of railway cargo from the central historical part of St. Petersburg.
4. Concentration of work with inert construction cargo transported by rail for the construction complex of St. Petersburg at a minimum number of stations, sufficiently remote from residential areas.
5. Passing the transit flow of freight trains bypassing the core of the Petersburg urban agglomeration.
