The railway line Kozhva - Vorkuta is a section of the North Pechora railway (since 1959 as part of the Northern Railway). The main line was built according to the project of Lentransproekt (since 1951 - Lengiprotrans) to supply the country with fuel from the newly formed Vorkuta coal complex during the Great Patriotic War.

In the 1950s, the ever-increasing demand for Pechora coal required the transformation of the single-track Pechora railway into a double-track main line. The Pechora expedition of Lengiprotrans, knowing local conditions, promptly completed design work on the Kozhva-Vorkuta section, and in 1959 it was put into operation.

The project of the second tracks of the Pechora Mainline received an excellent assessment of the State Construction Committee of the USSR.
