In the early 1980s, Lengiprotrans developed a project for a railway bridge over the Volkhov River in the Volkhov District of the Leningrad Region. The structure was designed as part of the construction of the second tracks of the Volkhovstroy — Koshta line, which is part of the Petersburg — Vologda railway. The project was driven by the prospect of increasing freight traffic between St. Petersburg and the industrial regions of North-West Russia.

According to the initial scheme, the bridge crossing with a length of 420 m hardly differed from the existing railway bridge on the first tracks of the Volkhovstroy — Koshta line. Also, a railway overpass was designed across the road 59 m long. However, on the recommendation of the Ministry of Railways, the project was changed. The bridge was combined with the overpass by adding three spans to block the road. The total length of the structure was 472 m.

In order to reduce the metal consumption of the bridge, special spans were used: bolt-welded from low-alloy steels and continuous metal. The left-bank and right-bank abutments are designed on a natural foundation. Intermediate supports have a prefabricated monolithic structure.
