Station Volkhovstroy-I is located at the marshalling yard in the city of Volkhov. The station was opened in 1904 on the St. Petersburg - Vologda line under the original name Zvanka.
During the war, the station was destroyed, and in 1949 - 1953 a new building was built in its place. It is made in the Stalinist style and is crowned with a 30-meter tower with a spire and a clock. According to the concept, the building is a kind of monument to the glory of the heroes of the Volkhov Front. Also at the station there is a monument to the steam locomotive EU-708-64. This is the first train to arrive in 1943 at the Finland Station in Leningrad after the blockade was broken.
In the late 1990s, the station was reconstructed according to the Lengiprotrans project. In addition to the original architectural appearance, which has been preserved almost in its original form, an interior design has been added, made in accordance with modern standards. Communications were replaced, waiting rooms and the station square were equipped.
Currently, the Volkhovstroy-I station is considered one of the most beautiful in the Leningrad region. A tower with a spire is the hallmark of the city of Volkhov.
