The railway line St. Petersburg - Moscow runs through the territory of St. Petersburg and Moscow, Leningrad, Novgorod, Tver and Moscow regions. The population of the region served by the railway is more than 25 million people, which ensures a steady passenger traffic along the line.
In 1989-1994 Lengiprotrans developed a project for a new high-speed highway St. Petersburg - Moscow (VSM-1). However, for economic reasons, instead of building the HSR-1, the existing line St. Petersburg - Moscow was reconstructed with an increase in speed to 200 km / h. Several years later, the need arose for another modernization of the railway to organize the movement of high-speed trains.
During the implementation of the project, the following were built:
• the third and fourth routes from St. Petersburg to Malaya Vishera and from Reshetnikovo to Moscow;
• railway bypass of the Bologoye station;
• overpasses with highways.
Curved sections of the track were also laid and the stations were rebuilt. A contact network, signaling, centralization and blocking devices have been created along the line, communication has been organized.
In December 2009, the first high-speed train "Sapsan" passed the route Moscow - St. Petersburg.
