Reconstruction of the Homs - Akkari section

Design of the Homs - Akkari - Tartus railway line
Project Status:
Highway for connecting the central part of Syria with the seaport of Tartus
Реконструкция участка Хомс — Аккари

For many years Lengiprotrans has been developing the railway network in the Syrian Arab Republic. Before the start of the institute's work, Syria had the only railway, which included the Homs-Akkari section with access to the Lebanese ports of Tripoli and Beirut. The task was to organize railway approaches to the Syrian ports of the Mediterranean Sea - Tartus and Latakia. This was necessary for the export of goods (oil, cotton, wheat) from the eastern regions of the country.

A project was developed for the reconstruction of the Homs-Akkari section with a length of 62 km. Of these, 40 km required modernization and 22 km - removal of the railway from the territory of Lebanon on the Kizlyakher - Tell - Kalah stretch due to the population of the area and difficult topographic conditions.

In 1966-1968, design and survey work was carried out on the track.
Work on the Kizlyakher - Akkari section was complicated by the crossing of the ridge railroad. For the rest of its length, it passes through an area with a relatively calm relief. Among other things, research was hampered by the tense political situation in the Middle East. A feature of road design in Syria was the track gauge of 1,435 mm.
In 1968, the main design work was completed. However, due to hostilities, construction was frozen and resumed only in the late 1970s. For which additional design work was required, taking into account the destruction and changed conditions for the passage of the route.
In 1983, the construction of the railway section was completed.
