Volkhovstroyevsky railway junction is a large junction of the October railway. The railway junction includes: Porogi station, Kukol station, post 2 km, post 12 km, post 117 km and other stations.
In the 2000s, Lengiprotrans developed a project for the reconstruction of the Volkhovstroy railway junction in order to increase the volume of traffic through the Volkhovstroy station by at least 1.5 times. It was also required to provide a through passage of transit cargo traffic along the Vologda - Volkhovstroy - Mga - St. Petersburg line bypassing the railway junction.
The project provides for the following works:
• construction of the second main track with electrification on the tracks post 116 km - post 2 km, station Porogi - station Kukol on the same roadbed with the existing track;
• lengthening of receiving and departure tracks up to a useful length of 1050 m;
• opening of the post 12 km;
• equipment of tracks with ABTC-EM system;
• construction of buildings and structures, improvement of sites;
• contact network, communication lines and power supply.
The specialists of Lengiprotrans performed calculations within the framework of the working project on the throughput capacity of the Kukol station at the junction of the double-track bypass of the junction and the junction of the connecting line at the 117 km post. Calculations have shown the need for the construction of overpasses to exclude significant train delays on the approaches to them.
