The Atasu - Karazhal railway line was designed by Lentransproekt (since 1951 - Lengiprotrans) in the late 1940s. The road was supposed to provide access to an iron ore deposit in Kazakhstan.
Research, design and construction of the line were carried out on a tight schedule. In 1947, survey work began, and in April 1949 the technical design was completed.
