The Oktyabrsky Steam Locomotive Repair Plant is the oldest of the factories of the Ministry of Railways (MPS) for the manufacture of rolling stock. It was founded in 1826 as part of the Alexandrovsky iron foundry, and in 1844 it was transferred to the Main Administration of Railways and renamed into the Alexandrovsky Main Mechanical Plant of the Petersburg-Moscow Railway.
In 1934-1936, the collective of the Plants Department of Lentransproekt (since 1951 - Lengiprotrans) developed a project for a radical reconstruction of the enterprise. As a result of the reconstruction, the old plant turned into the largest enterprise of the Ministry of Railways with continuous production, with large, well-ventilated workshops, united under one roof.
In 1962, in connection with the re-profiling of the enterprise for the repair of electric trains, the plant was renamed into the Oktyabrsky Electric Car Repair Plant.
