The Sary-Yazy-Kala-i-Mor railway section is part of the Mary-Kushka line with a length of 313 km, which is part of the Turkmen railway (until 1991 it was part of the Central Asian railway system). Among other things, Kushka station was the southernmost station on the USSR road network.
Lengiprotrans was instructed to develop a project for the removal of the Sary-Yazy - Kala-i-Mor section due to the need to bypass the reservoir on the Murgab River. In connection with irrigation works on the Murgab river, along the valley of which the Mary - Kushka line passed, the level of the river rose, and for about 100 km from the Mary station, the railway was flooded.
In 1966-1968, surveys were carried out and a design assignment was drawn up. In 1971-1973, a technical project was drawn up, and in 1975 it was approved.
