During the Soviet period, Lengiprotrans took an active part in the development of railway approaches to the commercial sea ports of the Baltic republics. This was a strategically important task, since the ports were large transit centers for the transshipment of goods from the sea to the railroad and vice versa. In 1970–1980, the institute developed a project for the “District Railway Park on the Kundzinsala Island and the Access Roads of the Riga Sea Port”.
Kundzinsala Island is the second largest island on the Daugava River (also the Western Dvina) within the city of Riga. The island was formed from several small islands in the second half of the 18th century as a result of the construction of a protective dam and the deepening of the river Daugava. The island is built up mainly by industrial enterprises, and the container terminal of the Freeport of Riga is also located there. The island is connected with the “continental” part of the city by a railway bridge.
The project provides for the construction of a new cargo area of the seaport on the Kundzinsala island, providing an increase in cargo turnover by 3 million tons per year of container traffic and dry cargo ships. The specialists of Lengiprotrans have developed the track development of the district park on the island and the access road to the Riga-Tovarnaya junction station.
