The Volkhovstroy - Koshta railway line runs in the North-West of Russia through the Leningrad and Vologda regions. Volkhovstroy and Koshta stations are located near the regional centers of St. Petersburg and Cherepovets, respectively. The line is part of the Petersburg-Vologda railway, built in 1902-1905. The exit of trains from St. Petersburg to the Trans-Siberian Railway is carried out through this route.
In the 1980s, Lengiprotrans developed a project for second tracks on the Volkhovstroy - Koshta section. This was due to the prospect of increasing freight traffic between St. Petersburg and the industrial regions of North-West Russia.
A number of artificial structures were designed on the site: 2 large bridges across the Sudu River, 14 medium bridges, 3 rail and road overpasses, 60 culverts. Of particular importance was an extra-curricular bridge across the Volkhov River with a length of 472 m.
