The Ertom - Karpogory section is part of the Mikun - Arkhangelsk railway line. The road was necessary for the development of huge forests and the development of the timber processing and pulp and paper industries in the Arkhangelsk region and the Komi Republic.
Until 1965, the research and design of the timber railways Mikun - Ertom in Komi and Arkhangelsk - Leshukonskoye in the Arkhangelsk region were carried out. Later "Lengiprotrans" proposed to build a railway as an integral part of the country's railway network along the general direction Mikun - Arkhangelsk. At the same time, it solved the problem of timber transportation. The proposal was approved and the Ertom - Karpogory section was included in the subsequent work plan.
In 1970 - 1971, surveys were carried out at the Ertom - Karpogory section, and in 1972 a design assignment was drawn up. However, it was not approved due to lack of funding. The problem is still awaiting its solution, since the construction of the remaining 120 km will reduce the mileage of transit trains from Vorkuta to Arkhangelsk and Murmansk by 300-400 km.
