The Strategy for the Development of Railway Transport in the Russian Federation until 2030 and the Transport Strategy of the Russian Federation provide for the construction of new express and high-speed lines. The implementation of the Moscow - St. Petersburg high-speed railway project (VSZhM-1) will improve transport links between the regions of the Russian Federation, reduce passenger travel time and provide them with a qualitatively new level of service.
Construction and commissioning of VSZhM-1 is planned in stages from 2024 to 2027. One of the stages of the project's implementation is the construction of the St. Petersburg - Veliky Novgorod section, the design of which was entrusted to Lengiprotrans JSC.
The design of high-speed rail systems in St. Petersburg is being carried out simultaneously with the implementation of the following projects for the development of railway infrastructure: construction and reconstruction of the main tracks on the section St. Petersburg-Glavny - Obukhovo, Volkovskaya - Obukhovo, reconstruction of the Tsimbalinsky overpass.
At the beginning of December 2020, at the Scientific and Technical Council of Russian Railways, the Novgorod option for tracing the highway was chosen.
In the same year, a variant of the location of the station terminal for VSZhM trains in St. Petersburg at the site of the “former warehouses of the Kokorev merchants”, west of the platform park of the Moscow railway station, was approved for further development.
